Thank you for visiting The American Dial. We are watch enthusiasts who have a special interest in the resurgance of American watch making.
Most of the watches that are covered on this site do not live up to what the FTC considers ‘American Made’ watches, which by FTC standards means that virtually all of the watch needs to be comprised of USA sourced parts (Compare that to Swiss watches that only need to be 60% locally sourced.)
Essential components: movements, hairsprings, and jewels are rarely mass-produced in the USA. So this makes it very difficult to legally qualify for an American Made label.
Because we want to cover and support companies that also assemble their watches in the USA, we created a four tier system that lets you view brands that qualify as American Made under the FTC rules (Tier 1) to watches that are assembled in America (Tier 4).
Tier placement comes from the brand’s own published statements, and cross-checked against independent reporting from Worn & Wound, Hodinkee, aBlogtoWatch, Quill & Pad, Monochrome, Time and Tide, Gear Patrol, and a few others.
Keep in mind that the tier system is a living list. If you know of, or own/work for, a watch brand that you believe qualifies to included on The American Dial, contact us with answers to these three questions:
- Where is the movement manufactured?
- Where is the case manufactured?
- Where is the watch finally assembled?
If all three questions are answered we can include you in our coverage.
